This year is quickly coming to a close, days are getting shorter and 2020 planning is well underway. As we enter our 22nd year in business I can’t help but reflect on the past 21 years. I’m proud of the family atmosphere, the dedication to clients, the passion we have for doing media the right way with transparency and hard work. I am so grateful for our dedicated clients and the many vendors who are truly an extension of our team. Most importantly I am grateful for our amazing employees who continue to blow me away with their passion, strong work ethic, and endless curiosity!
I’ve learned a lot over these past twenty-one years and wanted to share my top 10 principles:
1. EMBRACE FAILURE.
We are taught from a very young age to avoid failure. The shame associated with failing a class, failing in sports, failing our parents, makes us extremely uncomfortable. But after 21 years of owning a small advertising business, I have learned to embrace failure. We have all heard the famous quotes over the years. One of my favorites is from Steve Jobs “Embrace every failure. Own it, learn from it, and take full responsibility for making sure that next time, things will turn out differently.” Our agency is committed to pushing the envelope, asking all the hard questions, and while we minimize the risks, embracing failure may lead to something extraordinary down the road.
2. CONTINUOUSLY TEST, LEARN AND REFINE.
One constant is change. The speed of our space is amazing. You have to invest the time and roll up your sleeves. The natural curiosity to learn, the dedication to flawlessly execute, identify learnings and start the process all over, again and again.
3. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS.
The details aren’t sexy. They’re under-appreciated. They’re not usually a lot of fun. But if there are issues – and thankfully this hasn’t happened much during our 21 years – it can be painful. Sweat the details. Have processes in place to mitigate risk.
4. RELATIONSHIPS MATTER.
In the world of the gig economy and the short-termness of the space, it is impressive how much continuity there is in the rep space. We know them. They know us. We consider them an extension of our team. This collaboration helps our client business.
5. WE ARE FAMILY.
I’ve tried to instill a family type atmosphere. I think this is where the size of a smaller agency has its advantages. Always cognizant of the importance of having an environment that has a good work/life balance.
6. SURROUNDED BY EXPERTS.
I’m a big proponent of surrounding yourself with the best team possible – not one person has all the answers. Having passionate and diverse team members that are driven to be strong. To be experts.
7. IMPORTANCE OF INNOVATION.
Invest in the tools and education to stay on top of industry trends.
8. TRANSPARENCY 24/7.
Popular buzz word but few truly execute. From managing the financials to day-to-day projects.
9. MANAGING EXPECTATIONS.
Never over-promise and never make promises you can’t keep – I have truly lived this with our two daughters as well as our clients.
10. PROCESS IS IMPORTANT
The only way to stay on top of all the details is to follow the process, follow the process, follow the process.
